CULTURAL EVENTS

Each month, we are holding a series of special events at The Cornwall Hotel.

Thursday 24 November - We are offering local art lovers the opportunity to
hear Anna Navas talk about the project, ‘The Painter With Women’ on Thursday 24th November at 8.00pm.

The artist Robert Lenkiewicz (1941 – 2002), moved to Cornwall in the early 1970s. Over the course of 30 years working from his Plymouth studio, he became arguably the South-West’s most celebrated artist of modern times. His extraordinary body of work has been deemed ‘of national importance’ by the British Museum.

The Cornwall Hotel is privileged to have the opportunity to display five astonishing Lenkiewicz portraits, including two self-portraits, thanks to the generosity of a local private collector.  More information about Lenkiewicz at The Cornwall.

Anna Navas has been a Trustee of The Lenkiewicz Foundation since it began over 10 years ago. The Lenkiewicz Foundation is a charity that was set up to promote the work and ideas of the Plymouth-based painter.  Anna first met Lenkiewicz in 1990 and sat for countless paintings by him until his death in 2002. She currently works as the Film Programmer for Plymouth Arts Centre.

Lenkiewicz worked on themed projects which often included paintings and written material which he presented together in an attepmt to illustrate the ideas behind each project.

There were 20 Projects in all, with titles including Vagrancy, Love and Romance, Jealousy, Suicide, Old Age, Local Education and this talk will be about Project 18 The Painter With Women: Observations on the Theme of ‘The Double’.

Anna first met Robert when he was working on this project and began sitting for him then. She will be talking about the origins of this particular project and the ideas Lenkiewicz developed during it.
